Northwest Syria – 2023
Syrian Response Coordination Group during the year 2023 documented many events that occurred in the region, most notably:
§ Field conditions:
¶ Violations and targeting by various parties:
- Number of violations: 4,382 violations distributed among:
- Syrian regime forces: 3,898
- Russian forces: 114
- Syrian Democratic Forces: 269
- Iranian forces and affiliated militias: 94.
- International Coalition: 7
¶ The aforementioned violations caused a number of massacres in which dozens of civilians were killed: - Number of massacres: 11.
- Number of victims of the massacres: 70, including 12 women and 29 child.
- Number of injuries: 171, including 12 women and 31 child.
¶ Civilian casualties and injuries: - Syrian regime and Russia:
Victims: 93, including 12 women and 25 child. - Casualties: 457, including 77 women and 152 child.
*Syrian Democratic Forces: - Victims: 8, including 2 women and 5 child.
- Casualties: 28, including 5 women and 13 child.
¶ Remnants of war and explosions (IED, mines, UXO): - Total number: 63
- Casualties and injuries:
Number of victims: 22, including 10 child. - Number of casualties: 88, including 37 child and 6 women.
¶ Targeted facilities and infrastructure: - Indirect targeting: 40 facilities, including 6 camps, 5 health facilities, 18 schools, and 11 service facilities.
- Direct targeting: 93 facilities, including 20 camps, 40 educational facilities, 18 health facilities, and 14 other service facilities.
§ Humanitarian conditions:
¶ Fires recorded in NW Syria:- Fires in homes: 312 fires.
- Casualties: 65, including 24 child and 23 women.
- Deaths: 12, including 11 child and a woman.
- Fires in camps: 198 fires.
- Number of damaged tents: 313 tents.
- Casualties: 26, including 8 child and 7 women.
- Deaths: 5, including 3 childri and 1woman.
¶ Suicide cases: The number of suicide cases recorded in the regions of northwestern Syria during the year 2023 reached more than 81 cases distributed among: - Suicide cases: 44 cases (10 child, 8 women, 26 men).
- Failed suicide cases: 37 cases (8 child, 21 women, 8 men).
¶ Movement of displaced people: The regions of northwestern Syria recorded several movements of displacement or arrival to the region during the year 2023, according to the following sequence: - A movement coming from the areas of the Syrian regime to the areas of northern Syria via “smuggling routes and illegal crossings”, where the number of arrivals reached 33,565 people.
- Traffic coming from Turkey into Syria through the border crossings, “Bab Alsalameh , Bab El Hawa”, and the number of arrivals reached 62,386 people.
- A displacement movement from the areas of the eastern and southern Idleb countryside during the military escalation operations and the continued violations recorded, as the number of displaced people reached 112,544 people.
- A displacement movement based on the economic reality, “looking for work, leaving cities and villages to camps because they cannot bear the economic conditions”, and their number reached 41,553 people.
- Displacement movement as a result of the devastating earthquake that struck the region on 06.02.2023 and loss of shelter, amounting to 224,581 people.
¶ Camp conditions: IDP camps in northwestern Syria have recorded many damages since the beginning of 2023 as a result of various weather factors “rainfalls, snow storms, etc”, according to the following information: - Number of affected camps: 247 camps.
- Number of tents completely destroyed: 144 tents.
- Number of partially damaged tents: 437 tents.
- Number of affected displaced people: 113,562 people.
¶ Humanitarian response operations:
The year 2023 witnessed a significant increase in the humanitarian needs of civilians in the region and an increase in the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance to more than 4.4 million people, 35% of whom are residing in camps, in addition to the continuous rise in the prices of basic materials and commodities in the region, in addition to the increasing rates of unemployment among civilians. Very high rates, reaching 88.74% on average, while the humanitarian response to the region according to sectors on average reached: - Education sector: 31%
- Food security and livelihoods sector: 51%
- Health and Nutrition Sector: 33%
- Shelter sector: 46%
- Water and sanitation sector: 42%
- Protection sector: 35%
- Non-food sector: 41%.
¶ UN cross-border humanitarian aid:
The total number of UN trucks received through the three border crossings with Turkey reached 5,391, distributed among: - Bab El Hawa crossing: 4,402
- Bab Alsalameh crossing: 889
- Ar-Ra’ee crossing: 100
